Thanks Volunteers: Clean-Up
A small but mighty crew of fans and neighbors met up on the morning of May 9 for the Second Annual DGS United neighborhood cleanup around Allianz. We grabbed gloves, grabbers, and bags, walked around the Midway neighborhood and picked up every piece of trash we could find. Afterward we all shared ice cream because honestly “Ice cream makes volunteering fun!”
We could see the difference when we were done. Sidewalks looked cleaner, bags filled up, and people actually smiled while picking up trash.
Big thanks to Bethlehem Lutheran Church of the Midway
The Church and Pastor Kirsten were great hosts, giving us a place to meet, wash up and store supplies (especially the ice cream)! Bethlehem Lutheran is centered in the Allianz Field neighborhood, and we enjoyed learning about the many ways they participate in and care for the Midway community. Their support made the whole day run smoothly.
Bethlehem and Open Hands Midway run several volunteer opportunities that are easy to join:
Open Hands Midway meal service — Mondays and Wednesdays, 12–2 pm.
Food shelf — Tuesdays, 12–2 pm.
Food Rescue — pick up donations from Kowalski’s on Tuesday and Thursday mornings; about a 1–2 hour commitment; teaming up makes lifting boxes easy.
Open Hands welcomes one-time or ongoing help — whatever you can do. You can see what opportunities are available and sign up at https://www.openhandsmidway.org/volunteering.
Why It Matters
Showing up for an hour or two was an easy and fun way to show that we’re not just fans in the stands — we care about the place we all hang out on game day. We had a great time and got to meet several neighbors who were happy to see us taking care of Midway. And to top it off, as one of the volunteers put it, “This was a fun way to meet other fans.” We are planning another clean-up in the fall, so come join us, have fun, and eat ice cream!
